THE LIGHTHOUSE=20

ASSYRIANS & THE=20 CHURCH

At a time when the disorderly = scattered=20 Assyrians are liably plunging into total annihilation and that the = "light of the=20 people" (the leaders, irrespective of class or category) are absolutely = absent=20 minded of how to implement a national rescue, or, to create among the = masses an=20 impulsive urge to successfully maintain the waning vitality of this = great=20 nation.=20

I am forced to divulge all the = derelictions=20 that led this people into an awkward degeneration.  There were, as=20 specified by history, so many hostile powers trying to demolish the=20 Assyrians.  But the ugliest foe that has so far inappreciably = eroded the=20 very fabrical structure of the bellicose Assyrians has been the unstable = theocracy (religious circles).  Even now the badly shattered = Assyrians are=20 obscurantly following the undisciplined principles exercised by the = self-styled=20 clerics whose motives are personal egoism.=20

How to materialize the above=20 prologue.=20

In the year 400 A.D. the = Christianized=20 Assyrians were subdivided into three unscriptural denominations whose = poisonous=20 determination was geared towards uprooting each other.  As the = Middle East=20 was under the occupation of non-Christianized powers (Romans and = Persians) the=20 schismatic groups started slandering each other by false reports to the = ruling=20 authorities which infuriated them to adopt severe persecutions against = those=20 self-seeking groups.  As specified by history, millions of innocent = Assyrians were brutally butchered by the ruling powers.  Worst of = all, the=20 heads of the three antagonistic church groups indoctrinated the masses = to=20 spiritual passivism (something that was absolutely never called on by=20 scriptures) in the face of the persecution.  As proof of this, I = would sat=20 that in the year of 637 A.D., Umar ibn Khatab by no more than ten = thousand=20 irregular soldiers invaded and occupied Mesopotamia.  At this time = the=20 hypnotized Assyrians had eighty thousand clerics and monks, most of whom = led=20 secluded hermitic lives.  These Assyrian masses never resisted or = arose as=20 a whole to ward off from their threatened entity the relentless, savage=20 incursions.  Such untoward phenomenon continued persistently = throughout the=20 ages.  The obstinate heads of church never realized that their = peculiar=20 standings tended Christianity as a whole in the Middle East to vaporize = into a=20 weak non-entity.  Even now the heads of the churches are very = actively=20 trying to make the masses remain subservient to their fossilized dormant = auspices.  There is no room to enumerate all the conspicuous = derelictions=20 committed by the inconsistent factions whose whole prelates are very = actively=20 obdurate to sacrifice something to attain a unity-which is the only = means to=20 enable dispersed Assyrians to preserve their waning = nationalism.=20

During the past century, by a = progressive=20 civilization, fifty-four African nations from a state of savagery-have = now been=20 fully cultured to have their own independence.  The Assyrians, on = the other=20 hand, are still obscurantly following the very credulous principles that = have so=20 far fragmented them into a state of total disintegration.  No = people in=20 this mutable world have been able to achieve formative aspiration before = the=20 eradication of the disruptive obstacles.  Notwithstanding = everything stated=20 above, Assyrianism is still alive as symbolized by those undaunted = giants in the=20 North of Mosul who are amid numerous odds proclaiming that they--the = legitimate=20 survivors of the mighty Assyrians-are inhabiting the land of their=20 ancestors.  There is no power to divest them from that holy = heritage. =20 These Assyrians in the North are in urgent need of financial aid to = enable them=20 to construct their desolate villages and to make their domain = impregnable. =20 Is such essential aid forthcoming?  Of course not.  The = reasons are as=20 follows. . . (1) by a well organized scheme, 150,000 thousand dollars = could=20 easily by contributed monthly by the Assyrians of American and = Canada.  But=20 the discordant political and social leaders are unable to materialize = this holy=20 effort as they are still under the spell of individualism.  (2) = Millions of=20 dollars are being spent by the still dominant religious dignitaries of = both=20 divided parties for building churches and to enable them to have a life = of lords=20 at a time when the Assyrian "ship" is liably plunging into the eternity = of=20 irrevocable nonexistence caused by the uncharitable = dispersion.=20

The most essential priority to = be taken by=20 the Assyrian clergy would be to urge their masses to centralize their = attention=20 to rescuing the "plunging ship", rather than building ornamental = churches which=20 saps the very economical strength of the people and/or averts their = attention=20 from the real dilemma at hand.=20

Three quotations to reprove the = short-sightedness of the Assyrian leadership are 1) St. Paul in his = epistle to=20 Philippeans, Chapter 3, verse 17-19 says "Brethren be imitators of me = and mark=20 those after the pattern you have in us.  For many of whom I have = told you=20 often and now tell you even weeping, are enemies of the cross of = Jesus. =20 Their end is ruin and their god is their belly, their glory is in their = shame,=20 their mind the things of the earth".  2) When Russia was invaded by = Charles, King of Sweden, Peter the Great ordered that all church bells = be melted=20 and converted into guns and ammunition to save the country.  3) = Ghandi the=20 liberator of India said that "any religion or religious personnel that=20 refrain(s) from contributing towards the perpetual well being of the = people are=20 not religions that would be preached by Jesus".=20

I swear by God that the issuing = of this=20 never untimely exhortative article is never to disparage any personage, = but, is=20 rather to incite the dormant Assyrian to desist following fossilized=20 incantations sung by unscrupulous people, whose whole whims are never = focused=20 for fostering a viable scheme to reanimate the Assyrianism--as = symbolized by=20 those in Northern Mosul--whose holy initiative needs substantial aid = from the=20 Assyrians abroad.=20

Arise dear elite Assyrians and = abhor the=20 present loathsome inertia, which betokens a final frustration of a = people, who,=20 as listified by unearthed material, gave the world rudimental elements = if the=20 present universal technology.=20

Let your pivotal slogan be = UNITY.  Who=20 ever does not subscribe to such a holy appeal has to be treated as a = traitor to=20 nation and church.=20

GOOD MORNING BET-NAHRAIN=20

158  MANDAEANS  = DETAINED =20 IN  INDONESIA

Courtesy of Radio Free Europe;  Article by = David=20 Nissman=20

(ZNAP:  Jakarta)  The = Mandaean=20 Society of America issued an urgent appeal on 12 May, addressed to = Indonesia,=20 the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and the International Red Cross, = to=20 prevent the deportation of the 158 Mandaean (also referred to as = "Sabeans")=20 refugees from Indonesia to Iraq.  They were arrested in the process = of=20 being smuggled into a safe refuge in Australia.=20

The Baghdad newspaper "Babil," = described=20 the detained Mandeans as "traitors" on 24 April. The Mandaean Society of = America=20 notes that "if these people are returned to Iraq, they would probably = face=20 execution. Even if their names are given to the Iraqi authorities, their = relatives might suffer severe punishments as well."=20

The Mandaeans are known as the = Christians=20 of Saint John and form the only Gnostic religious sect that survives in = the=20 world.  Their name is Aramaic for 'knowledge', a translation from = the Greek=20 'gnosis'. Their language, similar to Syriac, is Eastern Aramaic. =20 Originally, they inhabited the marshlands in the Ahwar district of = southern=20 Iraq.  Following the Gulf War, those who could left Iraq. They now = live in=20 exile in many parts of the world. Remaining in Iraq are still some = 30,000-50,000=20 Mandaeans.  As they do not accept converts for religious reasons, = they have=20 reached a point where their numbers do not increase.=20

Last year, between 13-14 June, = the Mandaean=20 Conference at Harvard University was organized by Dr. J.F. Coakley, Dr. = Shafiq=20 Abouzayd, Dr. J.J. Buckley, the Department of Near Eastern Languages = &=20 Civilizations, Harvard University and the Aram Society for = Syro-Mesopotamian=20 Studies.   The participants discussed the history and the = religion of=20 this Aramaic speaking group based in southern Iraq and = Iran.=20

SADDAM PLANING "LEBANON II" IN = NORTHERN=20 IRAQ

(ZNDA:  London)   According to = London's=20 Observer and the Jerusalem Post, the Iraqi President = Saddam=20 Hussein has conducted secret talks with the Israeli government over the = past 15=20 months.   Saddam's representatives have repeatedly told the = Israelis=20 that if they work to end Iraq's diplomatic isolation, Baghdad will = arrange for=20 more than 300,000 Palestinian refugees living in Lebanon to be airlifted = to new=20 lives in Iraq and will tone down its hostile rhetoric towards the Jewish = state.  Lebanon's Palestinian population poses the most significant = threat=20 following the Israelis' planned withdrawal from the south of the country = later=20 this summer, and moving them to Iraq would solve a significant problem = for=20 Israel.=20

Nabil Musawi, a Shi'ite member of the central = committee of the=20 London-based Iraqi National Council (INC), told The Jerusalem Post that = any such=20 deal would lead to a full-scale civil war in Iraq.  "We will not = allow a=20 single Palestinian into the country," he said.  Musawi added that = there are=20 currently some 200,000 Palestinians in Iraq. He also revealed that two = months=20 ago the Iraqi regime decreed that Palestinians could own property in = Iraq,=20 specifically in the northern city of Kirkuk, claimed by both the Kurds = and the=20 Turkeman populations.=20

Again according to the Jerusalem Post, official = sources in=20 Washington, London, Amman and Jerusalem last week confirmed the contacts = between=20 the two countries and the Iraqi proposal. Senior US State Department = sources=20 told The Observer: "We know that this is being talked about. No = agreement has=20 been finalized but we are pretty confident it is going to = happen."=20

An airlift moving the refugees - which would cost = more than=20 $100 million - would be funded by Israel and its supporters overseas, = the State=20 Department source said.=20

NEWS DIGEST=20

A CHURCH OF THE EAST BISHOP = POSSIBLE VICTIM=20 OF EXTORTION

Reprint of a Chicago Tribune article by Matt=20 O'Connor,  May 26.=20

(ZNDA:  Chicago)  A = woman who=20 allegedly extorted tens of thousands of dollars from a church bishop = after=20 secretly videotaping an amorous exchange with him was charged Thursday = in a=20 10-count federal indictment.=20

The indictment against Yasmeen = Khan, 41,=20 contains few details, but other court documents obtained by the Tribune = allege=20 she had blackmailed the bishop for months.=20

One of Khan's lawyers, Janis D. = Roberts,=20 denied the charges, saying that her client, who now resides in Rockford, = "has=20 obviously a very different version of the facts and the conclusions from = those=20 drawn by the government." She declined to comment further. =

In court papers and at a bond = hearing,=20 authorities indicated the bishop, who wasn't named, was affiliated with = the=20 Assyrian Church and led a parish in the Chicago area, of which Khan was = a=20 member, until late 1998 when he was transferred to a diocese in=20 Arizona.=20

In October 1998 Khan telephoned = the bishop=20 and invited him to her apartment on Chicago's North Side for dinner = alone,=20 according to the court papers.=20

Khan declared her love for the = bishop and=20 said she wanted to marry him, but he refused, though they "kissed = several=20 times," the criminal complaint said. On Nov. 10, the bishop again went = to=20 Khan's, authorities said. She and the bishop "engaged in consensual = kissing and=20 touching," the criminal complaint said.=20

Khan allegedly secretly = videotaped their=20 encounter, authorities said. The next day, he received a hand-delivered = copy of=20 the videotape as well as a threatening voice-mail message from Khan, the = charges=20 alleged. The day after the delivery, the bishop withdrew $17,000 in cash = from=20 his personal bank account, handed Kahn the money at her home and was = given one=20 videotape and numerous audio tapes, authorities said. Over the next = several=20 months, the bishop gave Khan an additional $41,500--though she was = indicted=20 Thursday for allegedly extorting a smaller amount of = money.=20

"MOVE OVER SUMER!", = 6000-YEAR-OLD CITY=20 FOUND IN SYRIA

(ZNAP: Chicago)  = Archaeologists from=20 the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute have uncovered the = protective=20 wall under a huge mound in Syria's Tell Hamoukar.  This wall of a=20 6,000-year-old city suggests that urban civilization and complex = government=20 structure rose earlier than previously believed.=20

The discovery at Hamoukar = suggests that=20 ideas behind cities may have predated the Sumerians, said McGuire Gibson = of the=20 Oriental Institute.  Among the features indicating the site was a=20 full-blown city, not just a town: thin, porcelain-like pieces of = pottery,=20 indicating a sophisticated manufacturing technique, and huge cooking = ovens, big=20 enough to feed large numbers of people.  There also were stamps to = make=20 impressions in wet clay - like primitive hieroglyphics - used to make = tokens=20 that served as records for trade transactions. The stamps were in the = shapes of=20 animals, including bears, dogs, rabbits, fish and birds.=20

If Hamoukar was developing into a city at the same time as the = Sumerians=20 were building cities, it's possible that ideas for urban development = came from=20 an even earlier culture, he said.  "We need to reconsider our ideas = about=20 the beginnings of civilization, pushing the time further back,'' said = Gibson,=20 who plans to present the findings this week in Denmark at the = International=20 Conference on the Archaeology of the Ancient Middle East.  Gil = Stein, a=20 Northwestern University archaeologist who specializes in the same region = and=20 time period, said he thinks the find is significant. "Traditionally, = scholars=20 had viewed southern Mesopotamia as the area where urbanized states first = developed, before spreading to less advanced areas,'' he = said.=20

This summer, the archaeologists = will=20 continue to dig in the hopes of finding portions or royal palaces and = temples -=20 structures that would confirm that the site is that of a previously = unknown=20 early civilization.=20

SURF'S UP!

=93It is unimaginable that Zinda Magazine = would print=20 this opinion piece without consideration to its authors. The = Mesopotamian=20 Forum's main responsibility is to quiet Assyrian and other minority = voices from=20 speaking against the massacres that Turkey committed during the 20th = century and=20 the inequality present today.=20

I would have hoped that Zinda = have the=20 understanding to only print material that is pro-Assyrian. And yes, I = know that=20 Zinda considers itself democratic in every way but it must acknowledge = the fact=20 that by printing anti-Assyrian material it is condoning the past actions = of=20 these peoples.=20

It is my sincerest hope that = Zinda either=20 retract the article immediately or place in its stead the multitude of = replies=20 and rebuttals from the different Assyrian forums present on the=20 internet.=20

=93Let me=20 begin by congratulating you for a superb job that you and Z-crew are = doing. For=20 the first time since the breakup of our nation, the Assyrians have been = able to=20 join together from all over the world, and read from the same page. This = alone=20 is the beginning of the Assyrian unity. Ever since my childhood I always = heard=20 the cry and complain of our people saying, that we are not united, and = we don't=20 work for the same goals, and we don't support each other. How can all = this=20 happen when there is no communication. I see Zinda as that common bridge = between=20 us. Zinda is the tool to focus our energy on some common goals.=20

This puts a tremendous responsibility on your = shoulders, and I=20 honestly think you realize the scope of this heavy task, and you are = acting upon=20 it. Among many areas Zinda brings awareness to me is my heritage, and = that has=20 been my biggest point of confusion. The more I read Zinda, the more = confused I=20 get about who I am, and where do I come from. In my own language I call = myself=20 Soraya. In Iran I was called Ashouri. In U.S. I am called Assyrian. All = along I=20 thought we are only one nation, which different nations call it = different names,=20 but when I hear different debates about Soroyo, and Soraya, and = chaldean, and=20 many others, that I have heard in the past few months, I really don't = understand=20 the relations. May be in the past this topic has been discussed, and = there are=20 no questions among older readers of Zinda, but for the new members like = me this=20 could be a very frustrating issue, and some times could a turn off. When = I hear=20 all these different references about my assyrian background, I feel like = I am=20 not what all these years I thought I was. This becomes extremely harder = when=20 there is no proof attached to these references, so I don't know what to=20 believe.=20

To make it short, I would like to suggest, that if = you have=20 discussed this topic in detail in previous publications, please make a = big=20 reference in your web site, so it catches every one's attention because = there=20 are always new comers like me who need this education. If this hasn't = been=20 discussed in detail, may be you can start a weekly forum for all = reader's=20 participation. Let this be discussed, argued, and fought over as much as = possible, because I don't see any subject with higher priority than our=20 identity. As I mentioned earlier, there will be no union so long as the = majority=20 is not educated, and doesn't read from the same page.=20

Keep up the good work=94=20

Contrary to popular belief, the = Assyrians=20 did not disappear as a distinct group of people after the conquest of = their=20 homeland (the mountainous regions of northern Iraq, north-eastern Syria, = and=20 south-eastern Turkey).  The Syriac-speaking Assyrians were amongst = the=20 first Christians and it is their faith that is in great measure due to = their=20 survival and the repeated attempts at their destruction over the=20 centuries.=20

NOT EVEN MY NAME =
by Thea Halo=20

From a Death March in Turkey to = a New Home=20 in America
A = Young Girl's=20 True Story of Genocide and Survival

Not Even My Name is the unforgettable story of = Sano=20 Halo's survival of the death march at age 10 that annihilated her = family-as told=20 to her daughter, Thea-and the poignant mother-daughter pilgrimage to = Turkey in=20 search of Sano's home seventy years after her exile. Sano, a Pontic = Greek from a=20 small village near the Black Sea, also recounts the end of her ancient, = pastoral=20 way of life in the Pontic Mountains.=20

The dreadful realization that something was amiss = came little=20 by little to Sano's village. Strangers began to inhabit the fields and = forests,=20 always watching from a distance like birds of prey. Turkish soldiers = made=20 periodic raids to seize men for slave labor in foul, lice-infested = camps, where=20 most died of disease, malnutrition, and exposure. Then in the spring of = 1920,=20 Turkish soldiers pounded on doors with the butts of their rifles and = shouted the=20 proclamation issued by General Kemal (Ataturk): "You are to leave this = place.=20 You are to take with you only what you can carry..." On their death = march,=20 victims lay where they fell and buzzards hung over their heads. So ended = the=20 three-thousand-year history of the Pontic Greeks in Turkey.=20

Stripped of everything she had ever held dear, even = her name,=20 at age fifteen Sano was sold into marriage to a man who brought her to = America.=20 He was three times her age. Not Even My Name follows Sano's = marriage, the=20 raising of her ten children, and her transformation from an innocent = girl who=20 lived an ancient way of life in a remote place to a nurturing mother and = determined woman in twentieth-century New York City.=20

Although Turkey actively suppresses the truth about = the=20 slaughter of almost 3 million of its Christian minorities-Greek, = Armenian, and=20 Assyrian-during and after World War I, and the exile of millions of = others, here=20 is a rare, first-hand account of the horrors of that genocide. But = Sano's story=20 is also one of triumph. A brilliant and mesmerizing memoir written in = haunting=20 and eloquent prose. Not Even My Name weaves a seamless texture of = individual memory that evokes all the suspense and drama of the = best-told=20 tales.=20

New Book by Prof. John = Joseph:  The=20 Modern Assyrians of the Middle East
Encounters with Western Christian missions, archaeologists, = and colonial=20 power

This is a revised edition of = the author's=20 The Nestorians and Their Muslim Neighbors (Princeton University Press, = 1961).=20 Early in the nineteenth century, the Aramaic-speaking "Nestorian" = Christians=20 received special attention when American Protestant missions decided to = educate=20 and reform them to help meet the challenge that Islam presented to the = growing=20 missionary movements. When archaeologist Layard further publicized the = historic=20 minority as "Assyrians", the name acquired a new connotation when other = forces=20 at work in the region - religious, nationalistic, imperialistic - = entangled=20 these modern Assyrians in vagaries and manipulations in which they were=20 outnumbered and outclassed. The study examines Western Christendom's = current=20 position on Islam, with emphasis on the Roman Catholic Church and the = World=20 Council of Churches. The revision draws on a wide variety of sources not = used in=20 the original. Readership: All those interested in Middle Eastern = minorities,=20 particularly the modern Assyrians and their ancient church, or in = missions to=20 the Muslims world, and the ecumenical movement since World War = II.=20
