THE=20 LIGHTHOUSE

THE 67th ASSYRIAN AMERICAN = NATIONAL=20 CONVENTION

It was simply spectacular!  = Thousands of=20 people and nearly two hundred delegates from the Assyrian organizations=20 representing several countries were on the floor of Chicago's Hilton = Hotel and=20 Towers for the 67th Assyrian American National Convention from August 30 = through=20 September 4.  There were hugs and kisses, long-standing greetings, = and=20 brief eye-exchanges.  They had come from Europe, Canada, Australia, = Russia,=20 and the Middle East.  They cheered, danced, argued, shouted, sang, = played=20 the drums and even carried off the pleasantly-surprised non-Assyrian = newlyweds=20 at the end of their wedding ceremony.  If the ultimate goal of this = convention was to bring together several thousand Assyrians from various = ethnic=20 and religious backgrounds, then the mission was fully = accomplished.  Yet a=20 few conventioneers returned home empty-handed, grieving the prospects = for the=20 survival of their national organization and ultimately the Assyrian = culture in=20 America.=20

The Convention officially began on=20 Wednesday.  The roped-off areas of the hallways and the unfriendly = faces of=20 the security personnel reminded us of the ugly realities of crowd = control in the=20 past.  Despite the well-attended nightly dance parties and the = large number=20 of people walking along the "suicide trail" this year's Convention was=20 impressively free of any serious clashes.   To our surprise = the only=20 laudable noise worth the attention of the Chicago Police came from the = meetings=20 of the Assyrian American National Federation.  Mr. Fred Parhad, the = famous=20 Assyrian Sculptor, had rightfully embarked on an offensive to grab some = support=20 from the AANF delegates for the revival of his ill-fated Samuramat = Statue=20 project in Chicago.=20

On Friday and Saturday, several = educational=20 sessions were organized by the AANF, the Assyrian Academic Society and = the=20 Assyrian scholars on hand.  Topics ranging from the Assyrian = identity and=20 heritage to music and literature were discussed by nearly thirty = scholars,=20 activists, political figures and graduate students.  The speakers = were some=20 of the most prominent people in the field of Assyrian studies, politics, = and the=20 Internet technology today.  The younger speakers often spoke with=20 passionate intensity and reminded their audience that there was hope for = the=20 future of Assyrian nationalism and recognition.   = Unfortunately, the=20 militant attitude of the youth in the past had drastically subsided this = year=20 and there was a greater emphasis on the quality of the Assyrian fonts on = the=20 Internet than the future of the spoken Assyrian language by 2010. =

As few were listening to one = speaker=92s discussion=20 of Assyrian identity in Sweden, hundreds more were preparing for another = =93la=20 Vida Loca=94 evening at the bar rooms.  The Assyrian =93Jennifer = Lopezes=94 and=20 =93Ricky Martins=94 gave the security officers plenty of reasons to = continuously=20 monitor the elevators and the small strip of walkway between the = registration=20 desks and Mrs. Field's Cookies stand.=20

This was also the year of AANF = elections for the=20 first president of the 21st Century.  The president, = vice-president,=20 treasurer, and executive secretary were elected by the 165 delegates = present at=20 the Sunday afternoon's election meeting.  As always, the real = campaigning=20 took place within 72 hours prior to the elections.  Indeed it is = during=20 these behind-the-scene meetings and feuds that the future presidents and = vice-presidents are determined.  No one had more difficulty = swallowing this=20 bitter truth than the most promising candidate at these elections - Mr. = Carlo=20 Ganjeh from California.=20

Zinda Magazine was informed by = reliable sources=20 that at the eleventh hour, Mr. Carlo Ganjeh was told that he no longer = was Zowaa=20 or AUA's favorite to cherish the position of presidency.  The most=20 important political fight of his life had practically come to an abrupt = end=20 without even a single vote cast.  Mr. Ganjeh, however, decided to = continue=20 his candidacy and met his challenge on the floor of the AANF election = meeting on=20 Sunday.  His challenger, Mr. Atour Golani as expected received a=20 substantial number of the votes from the local organizations in = Chicagoland and=20 Detroit.   Each affiliate of the AANF has equal number of = votes, up to=20 five, independent of the number of their organization's total = membership. =20 Therefore, the Assyrian American Civic Club of Turlock cast as many = votes as did=20 some other organizations whose only claim to existence is a postal = office=20 address in Chicago.  Mr. Ganjeh earlier had boasted that he could = deliver=20 the Chicago votes and could easily deny other candidates=92 = victory. =20 However, his =93platform=94 =96 a first of its kind in the = Assyrian-American politics=20 =96 was no match for the powerful political machine of the = Chicago-Detroit region=20 that accounts for over 50 percent of all votes cast.=20

Mr. Ganjeh=92s defeat confirmed the = apprehension of=20 the non-Chicago delegations that no serious challenge to the Mid-Western = Block=20 can be exhibited at the AANF elections.  In fact, in some circles = there are=20 now serious discussions revolving around secession from this 67-year-old = organization.  Some civic leaders find no other option left to = challenge=20 the outdated policies of the =93Chicago Boys=94 but to found a new = national=20 organization that is a true representation of the Assyrian communities,=20 particularly women and the youth.  It must be noted that the = combined=20 revenue generated from the Assyrian organizations in California alone = surpass=20 the total income produced by all other affiliates of the AANF.  = Both AUA=20 and ADM (Zowaa) also receive the majority of their financial support = from the=20 Assyrian organizations west of the Mississippi River.=20

The election results were revealed to = the public=20 at the Banquet Dinner on Sunday evening.  The speeches at this = year's gala=20 were greater in number, longer in duration, and less exciting than any = previous=20 years.  The first dance of the evening was enjoyed only shortly = before=20 midnight by which time many guests had already left their tables and = were=20 dancing with the younger crowd upstairs.

Mr. Golani's acceptance speech was = quite mundane=20 and devoid of any passion and excitement.   This was certainly = not=20 anywhere close to the long forgotten oratories of David Perley and = Malcolm=20 Karam. Golani, his voice trembling at times, failed to define an action = plan for=20 the first term of his presidency. He is an honest man, and not a = politician;=20 rather someone who gets the job done. And that is precisely what his = Detroit=20 friend and Chicago observers want him to accomplish until the next = election. On=20 Sunday Golani was handed the difficult task of bringing the two = federations=20 closer than ever and save the aged AANF from a break-up in the coming=20 months.=20

Moments after Golani's final = words,  Mr. Sam=20 Yono, President of the Chaldean Federation of America, stood up and = injected=20 himself into the limelight that was shining dimly on Mr. Atour = Golani. =20 Looming over Golani=92s small stature, Yono=92s general message was = clear: =20 =93The Chaldean Federation is behind Mr. Golani, a resident of Detroit, = and fully=20 supports his election.=94  The crowd while chewing the last bites = of their=20 belated dinner applauded with high intensity.=20

The future of the AANF as we know it = is probably=20 going to be the most important issue facing Mr. Golani.  The = concerns of=20 the unhappy delegations outside the Chicagoland must not be = underestimated by=20 the newly-elected president and his Executive = Committee.  Another=20 controversial issue is the closely-watched confluence of the two=20 Federations.  The question that many were asking at the Monday = picnic was=20 whether Mr. Golani=92s election was the first step toward the emergence = of a=20 Chaldean-Assyrian American National Federation prior to the 2004=20 elections.  Mr. Golani is the son-in-law of Mr. Aprim Rayis, the = former=20 Secretary General of the Assyrian Universal Alliance and a noted=20 Assyrian-Chaldean political figure.  His choice was certainly an = important=20 move toward the "Chaldeanization" of the Assyrian politics in the United = States.  Mr. Golani's most important task will be to reduce the = tension=20 building among the AANF affiliates due to the Census 2000 issue and the=20 Chicago-centric politics of his stagnant national organization. = It will be wise for Mr. Golani to begin the process of damage = control in=20 the west by appointing Mr. Ganjeh as the AANF Western Regional Director = and pay=20 a visit to his disgruntled constituents in California and other = non-Chicago=20 based affiliates.

The convention in Chicago once again proved to us = that we are=20 living in the most exciting times of our modern history. There is a = resurgence=20 of interest in the Assyrian culture and history, a desire for closer = unity among=20 diverse ethnic and religious groups, and greater involvement of the = Generation=20 X'ers in the social and educational activities. What is missing is this = same=20 group's interest in moving into the political arena of Assyrian national = and=20 international politics. Based on this assumption, the graying dinosaurs = that=20 have firmly held to their post in the AANF leadership continue to bask = in their=20 short-lived self-appointments.=20

By Monday night the unexpectedly warm = Chicago=20 weather had cooled off, as had the libido of hundreds of Assyrian = youth. =20 Elsewhere, the future leaders of the Assyrian nation, unabashedly = disinterested=20 in the politics of the AANF and invisible to a majority of the AANF = delegation,=20 grabbed their PalmPilots, laptops, and lecture notes and slowly drove = away from=20 the corner of Balbo and Michigan Avenue.  Speaking on their Nokia = cell=20 phones, they were already making plans for the next trip to the 2001 = convention=20 in San Jose, California.=20

ASSYRIANS IN TURKEY: "OUR = MINORITY RIGHTS=20 SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED"

Courtesy of Kurdish Observer: August = 28,=20 2000=20

The Assyrians in Turkey have given a = report to=20 the President, Prime Minister and other officials for education in their = language. The report which was prepared by the Assyrian Community argued = that=20 education in primary, secondary and high schools should be in Assyrian. = There=20 are 7 items in the report and it asks for the rights of Assyrians to be = put=20 under constitutional protection.
The Christian Assyrian Community pointed the = difficulties that the=20 Assyrian community have been facing in Turkey. The community sent = letters to the=20 President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit with = signatures of=20 Deyrulumur Minister Samuel Aktas and the Minister of Istanbul and Ankara = Yusuf=20 Cetin. The report pointed that Assyrians leave the country because of = the=20 oppression. =93Assyrians leave the country for Europe because they can = not=20 practice their language, religion and culture=94 concluded the report. = The report=20 further concluded, =93Turkey=92s cultural mosaic should be allowed to = get lost=94. In=20 addition, the report clarified the concept of minority rights and said, = =93As=20 Turkey=92s Assyrian Community, we have expectations from Republic of = Turkey in=20 regard to law and human rights.=94
=20

The report asked for education in = Assyrian=20 starting from primary schools to high schools. It also asked for removal = of=20 obstacles in front of broadcasting and publishing in Assyrian.  = Turkey=20 should also give the rights=20

Isa Cicek, the Minister for Middle = European=20 Assyrians, who have been in Turkey for last couple of days with a group = of 60=20 Assyrians and visiting Assyrian monasteries and residential areas, said = that=20 Turkey should give the rights that Europe already have recognized. Cicek = said,=20 =93Recognized rights should be put under state's protection. Cultural = and social=20 rights of the Assyrians in Europe have been put under states=92 = protection. For=20 example, The Netherlands have recognized this right for us. The = government allow=20 us to get education and practice our religion in our mother tongue.=20 Unfortunately, Turkey have not recognized these rights.=94

BASHIR SAADI TALKS AT ANNIVERSARY = CELEBRATION=20 OF ADO IN TURLOCK

(ZNDA: Turlock)  On Sunday, = August 13,=20 Bashir Saadi, a prominent member of the Assyrian Democratic Organization = engages=20 a small group of California's Central Valley residents in a discussion = on the=20 history of the ADO and its current activities.  Mr. Saadi, born in = Syria,=20 was a representative of the Syrian Parliament between 1994 and = 1998.  In=20 1999 he, along with four other Assyrians were arrested for aiding the = Assyrian=20 villages by drilling water wells in areas affected by drought and = Khabour=20 River's reduced water levels.  Through the efforts of local groups = and=20 outside pressure Mr. Saadi and his colleagues were freed from their = prison in=20 Damascus.=20

Mr. Saadi briefly reviewed the = history of ADO=20 since its inception in 1957 in Qameshli, Syria by a few Assyrian young = followers=20 of Malfono Naom Faiq and his contemporary Assyrian nationalists.  = He noted=20 that there remain only 2400 Assyrians in Turkey.  "Our lands must = be=20 returned to us in Turkey", said Mr. Saadi and explained the importance = of=20 pressuring the European countries in asking Turkey to recognize its = Assyrian=20 population in the Tur-Abdin areas.  "You must work together in = bringing=20 greater recognition of the 1915 Genocide by the Turkish government = against our=20 Assyrian people and Turkey must be brought to justice for its acts = against=20 humanity," noted Mr. Saadi.  Turkey has already been accepted as a=20 non-official member of the European Union and is on its way to full = recognition=20 by 2004.=20

On the condition of the Assyrians in = Syria, Mr.=20 Saadi explained that Assyrians and the Syriac-speaking groups that do = not=20 recognize themselves as Assyrian are identified by their religious = affiliation=20 and not ethnic identity.  "There is religious freedom in Syria for = all=20 Christians and each church manages its own activities," explained Mr.=20 Saadi.  He continued: "Our people support the new President, Bashar = Assad.  He's educated and very open-minded.  We expect that he = will=20 open our economy and allow greater political freedom."
At the end of his lecture, Mr. Saadi = reminded=20 his audience that such issues as inadequate water in the Assyrian = villages and=20 lack of funds to assist Assyrian students in Syria are daily realities = in=20 Syria.=20

The 43rd Anniversary Celebration of = the ADO was=20 held in the Gardens Motor Inn in Turlock and was also attended by Mrs. = Irene=20 Warda, ADO Representative in California; Mr. Andreous Yonan, Assyrian = Aid=20 Society- Modesto Chapter; Mr. Charles Evans, Assyrian American National=20 Federation representative in California; and Mr. Lazar Piro for the = newly-formed=20 "alliance" of the 16 Assyrian religious, cultural, and political = organizations=20 in the Central Valley.  Mr. Esha Warda was the master of the=20 ceremony.=20

Through the generosity of the = individuals present=20 and other concerned Assyrians elsewhere, a few thousand dollars were = collected=20 after Mr. Saadi's talk to assist the 47 students with their school = tuition and=20 related costs.  Zinda Magazine contributed $500.00 toward the = education=20 fund set for these Assyrian students in Syria.=20

=93I have=20 good news. My attempts were successful. This year the Ministry of = Education of=20 the Republic of Armenia gave two places at Yerevan Universities to = Assyrian=20 students without competition. These students will be studying = Arabic  and=20 Aramaic languages and about the Assyrian history. We can prepare = specialists on=20 the Assyrian language for primary Assyrian schools of Armenia. In this = way the=20 Armenian Government supports us so I can continue our educational = program of=20 saving and developing the Assyrian language in Armenia.  WE NEED = TEXTBOOKS=20 OF ASSYRIAN LANGUAGE, HISTORY AND SO ON.=20

=93I read in = Zinda=92s August=20 24, 2000 issue the interventions delivered by Miss Suzy David during the = year=20 2000 sessions of the Working Group on the Indigenous Populations. I = admire Miss=20 David=92s labor of love for the Assyrian people. Yet, how can one have = any=20 credibility when one=92s opening statement is making a claim that is = utterly=20 false? I=92d like to know when and how the Assyrian people elected Miss = David to=20 serve =93as a representative of the Assyrian people=94?
=20

The capital sin of Miss David and others at the = organization=20 she represents is their irresponsible act of self-appointing themselves = as the=20 representatives of the Assyrian people. Instead, they should work on = creating=20 the process through which the Assyrian people can elect a legitimate,=20 representative national body. Only such a body can draw the respect and = support=20 of the Assyrian people. And It is only with the support of the Assyrian = people=20 that we can insure our survival.=94 =

Ramin Daniels

=93I would like = to know if=20 anyone is interested in a project to build a church for our community. = In the=20 area of Los Angeles-either in Santa Monica, West Los Angeles, (Beverly=20 Hills-land per sq.ft/ is too expensive), Culver City area.  I have = noticed=20 that the Jewish inhabitants of southern California do the right thing by = their=20 community-almost every other block of a street they either have a prayer = building (they call it a =91Temple=92) or they are in the process of = buying land=20 and/or converting a rentable place for their worship.
=20

In Culver City the Muslims got together purchased the = lot and=20 built a beautiful cobalt and turquoise Mosque for their temple of = worship. (Of=20 course it does help to have an Saudi give a handsome donation). They did = right=20 by their community
to provide a prayer = building.
=20

It would be the appropriate action to do the same and = build a=20 church in the similar area(s). There is a lot of Pontian Greeks, = Armenians (they=20 mostly reside in Glendale), and Assyrians. Some are up north-some in = other=20 states-granted.   The Greek community in Los Angeles is = ignorant of=20 the Pontian Greeks and their tragic heritage. They have a vague knowing, = but=20 mainstream Greeks and Greek-Americans know little to nothing. They are=20 uncomfortable as they do not know how to relate to the Greeks who are = not, in=20 some quarters, considered =91Greek enough.=92=20

One woman, she is in her sixties, is residing Los=20 Angeles,  She is from a village in mainland Greece. Whenever her = son Ioanne=20 invites a friend into their home, his mother is standing at the top of = the=20 stairway, loudly asking  in her broken English: =93Is she/he = Greek!?=94=20
She is like many others who do not consider the = =93Turkish=94=20 Greeks to be =93quite Greek enough=94 to be considered Greeks. There = seems a strange=20 unspoken form within the Greek and Greek-American community here. One = which is=20 sad and due to either ignorance or misplaced nationalism. (There is no = reason=20 for a view of:  =93it=92s us v. them=94...I thought we were all = Greek=20 Christians.....).

When the Ottoman Empire = grew in=20 strength, the links between the Greeks of Greece and those from the = (Byzantine)=20 Turkish land were severed. The inhabitants grew up in harsh conditions = where it=20 is stated 80% or so of the population is Muslim!
=20

Clinging fiercely to their old traditions as = desperately as the=20 Old Believers do in Homer, Alaska, (Russian Orthodox who divided under = the=20 Church leadership of Patriarch Nikon). They cling to the traditions and = saints,=20 holidays from a time when the two main state languages were Greek and = for=20 foreign business Latin.  They hand down village stories of = incidents which=20 are long forgotten to the mainlanders across to the north. The = inhabitants cook=20 a meal, sing a song, pray with a unique chanting which is not heard in = style in=20 an American mainstream Greek Church.=20

The chanting mentioned by Thea Halo of her father = when he=20 prayed is unique to the Assyrian peoples and yes, similar to that which = is also=20 utilized by the Muslims in their prayers. (The book, Not Even My=20 Name).   There is a special need to cater to the Pontian = Greeks,=20 Assyrians and Armenians of this side of town. With a priest for each of = these.=20 It is possible to burrow one church and all share it during times. But = the issue=20 here is : to do something for our communities.=20

The mainstream Greeks can not be expected to be = responsible for=20 our community. Once, twice, to help out is fine. We need to have our own = priests, staff, and community people. When we have funerals, births,=20 marriages-we need our own culture to be kept in place.
Let me know how to go about asking the community through = Zinda of=20 anyone interested to meet to discuss this project. I feel deeply for our = community and realize we can not impose on others-our brothers-to always = be=20 there to assist us. We need our own Holy Church.
We=20 need to raise funds to have ready for the less fortunate who have = difficulty in=20 burials of loved ones. We have to partake of managed projects to make = sure the=20 elderly in our communities have food to eat. Relations to be comforted = in=20 stressful times. We must do it ourselves. It is a shame to stand by and = do=20 nothing. It is not only a Christian sin-but it is a sin against fellow=20 man.
=20

I feel very deeply about these topics and especially = assistance=20 programs for the elderly.   Let me know of any suggestions you = might=20 have.=20

Thanking you in advance.=94=20

CHALDEAN MAN WORKS FOR PEACE, = HELPS VILLAGES=20 IN BET-NAHRAIN

Written by Chris Singer for the = Detroit=20 News;  August 30, 2000=20

Asaad Yousif Kalasho is founder and president of the = Community=20 Educational Center on Woodward near Seven Mile in Chaldean Town. Kalasho = recently returned from a humanitarian mission to the Chaldean villages = in=20 northern Iraq where he delivered medicine and clothing that was = collected in=20 Metro Detroit. He, along with Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Gumbleton, and two = peace=20 groups are preparing for a visit from a Chaldean Catholic bishop who is = expected=20 to arrive from Iraq today. Kalasho agreed to be interviewed by On = Detroit=20 reporter Chris Singer about his trip to Iraq.=20

Q. Who is the bishop you=92re expecting?
A. Bishop Gabriel Kassab is in charge of the diocese in = southern=20 Iraq. He is coming to lecture the American people on the effect of the=20 (UN-imposed) sanctions.
=20

Q. Did you visit the Chaldean villages?
A. I was there for 18 days. I did visit the Chaldean = villages, but I=20 visited other villages also. It was strictly a humanitarian = visit.=20

Q. Were you born here or in the old country? =
A. The old country. I came to the United States in 1978. I = still=20 have family there. And friends also.=20

Q.=20 What is it like in Iraq?
A. Well, you have a = country=20 where their distribution of goods and medicine has to go through 50 = channels.=20 And it takes six months to a year to get anything, if you ever get it.=20 Everything has to go through the United Nations and all the bureaucracy = that=20 represents. You cannot support a nation of 22 million this way.  = The=20 hospitals in Iraq lack machinery and medicine when it=92s needed, = especially for=20 the newborns, who are skinny anyway, because their moms are = malnourished. And,=20 because of the uranium, many are born missing eyes, noses. Situations = like that=20 have tripled since the sanctions.
=20

Q. Uranium? Are you saying the U.S. used nuclear=20 weapons?
A. No. No. Not nuclear weapons. = There was=20 uranium in the bombs. During the war, 1991. There are scientific studies = from=20 the United Nations about the use of uranium, especially in the = south.
=20

Q. You mean the Garden of Eden, the delta (marshland = between=20 the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, said to have been the location of=20 Paradise)?
A. Yes. Where the Shiites are. The = people we=20 were supposed to protect. Two days ago, a baby was born with no eyes and = no=20 nose, just a hole in the forehead for a mouth. I do love this country. I = will=20 fight for this country. But not like this.

Q. Can you give me a specific example of something = you saw with=20 your own eyes and heard with your own ears?
A. A lady=20 needed oxygen in the hospital. And the doctor said, =93we=92re waiting = for another=20 lady to die and you can have that.=94
=20

Q. Did you see or hear anything about the so-called = =93weapons of=20 mass destruction=94 the United States claims Sadaam is producing or = experimenting=20 with?
A. Scott Ritter from the United Nations = said in=20 1994 that Iraq was free of weapons of mass destruction. In 1998, Iraq = was bombed=20 because Scott Ritter said Iraq is not cooperating. What is there to = cooperate=20 with if Iraq is free of such weapons?  You have to distinguish = between the=20 face of 22 million people and the face of the Iraqi government, because = you see=20 that same face elsewhere in the Middle East, in Syria and Saudi = Arabia.
=20

Q. What about the water in Iraq? We bombed the = pumping stations=20 (during the Persian Gulf war) and replacement parts are included in the=20 sanctions.
A. The United Nations says one cup = of water=20 out of three is contaminated. Cholera or Typhoid E. could destroy the=20 population.
=20

Q. Do you have any estimate of how many have died as = a direct=20 result of the sanctions?
A. The United = Nations records=20 say at least 1.2 million people have died. We, as Americans, are better = people=20 than we look like in the Middle East.
=20

Q. Are we growing a whole generation of = terrorists?=20
A. We cannot afford to make enemies of babies. Those = kids are=20 going to grow up to hate us.
=20

Q. In the United States we occasionally hear = allegations that=20 bombing runs are still being made .
A. Four = days ago,=20 they bombed two houses in the city of Semawa and a food storage that = belonged to=20 the United Nations.
=20

Q. We haven't heard much from either presidential = candidate=20 about foreign policy. All the talk has been domestic policy. What would = you like=20 to hear from George W. Bush or Al Gore?
A. I = do=20 understand why they're not talking about foreign policy. Because the = peace=20 process between Israel and Palestine is still going on.

One might tell you we=92re prosperous and strong, but = it=92s not true.=20 The foreign policy weave had in the last 10 years is a failure. Sadaam = Hussein=20 is stronger than ever.  I spoke to President Clinton myself last = night for=20 about five minutes. Debbie Stabenow introduced me. I've met him about = five=20 times. He hugged me and he told me, =93I promise you I will do something = before I=20 leave office.=94

=93ISRAEL MUST BUILD ALLIANCES = WITH NON-ARAB=20 MINORITIES IN THE MID-EAST=94

A Lecture by Prof. Mordechai Nisan = presented on=20 15 April 1997
Courtesy = of Mideast=20 Newswire
=20

At the invitation of Florida Atlantic = University,=20 Hebrew University Professor Mordechai Nisan delivered the Ziad Abdelnour = Middle=20 East Lecture titled =93Israel and Middle-East Minorities, Friends or = Foes,=94 on=20 April 10. Nisan, an international authority on Middle East and Israeli = affairs,=20 is the author of =93Middle East Minorities: A History of Self = Expression.=94=20 (MacFarland, 1991). The event, organized by the Department of Political = Science=20 of FAU, was sponsored by the Ziad Abdelnour Middle East Lecture, an = initiative=20 by a New York-based Lebanese-American businessman. Abdelnour, who headed = the=20 Arab Bankers Association of North America, has pledged in his letter = sent to the=20 event, to =93participate in all efforts leading to the emancipation of = the Middle=20 East Christians.=94
After an=20 introduction by Dean James Malek, dean of the Schmidt College of  = Arts and=20 Humanities, Dr Walid Phares, Professor of Political Science, presented = the event=20 and the speaker to an audience estimated at around 500 (local press = estimate).=20 Phares, an expert on Middle Eastern affairs, said =93this event is = academically=20 unique and intellectually exclusive. For the dominant debate in Middle = Eastern=20 Studies has for longtime excluded the study of the region's minorities = for=20 political reasons. It is the duty of scholars to shed light on the least = studied=20 subjects, particularly if they affect the lives of not only individuals = but=20 entire communities.=94 Phares said =93we don't hear much, we donut read = much, we=20 don't learn much about this missing part of Middle Eastern reality. In = the wake=20 of the Cold War, and in a region which fate is yet undecided between the = Arab-Israeli Peace Process and the surge of Islamic Fundamentalism, = millions of=20 individuals belonging to ethnic minorities are struggling for their = future.=20 Mordechai Nisan is among the very few scholars who dedicated their = research to=20 the subject of Middle East minority peoples.=94
=20

Addressing the topic, Professor Nisan = painted=20 first a different picture of the Middle east. =93The region has three = main=20 majorities, and a multitude of small peoples. The Arab Moslems, the = Iranian=20 Moslems, and the Turkish Moslems. The Jews, a minority in the past are = now a=20 majority in their own national homeland. The small peoples are those who = do not=20 enjoy a national homeland such as the Kurds, Berbers, Copts, or whose = country=20 was dominated by a neighboring power such as the Maronites of = Lebanon.=94 Nisan=20 first addressed the Christian minorities. =93The largest minority are = the Copts of=20 Egypt,=94 which he estimated at around 10 million. =93They are = persecuted on=20 religious, political, and economic levels. They are dispersed all over = Egypt and=20 particularly targeted by Moslem Fundamentalists.=94 The next most active = one are=20 the Maronites of Lebanon, today under Syrian occupation and Islamic = domination.=20 Their country was abandoned by the West to the Arab Islamics and as = result of it=20 they were military invaded in 1990. In southern Sudan, millions of Black = Africans, Christians and Animists, are under oppression by the Islamic = Arab=20 north. In Northern Iraq the Christian Assyrians are persecuted and are=20 emigrating towards the West.=94=20

Answering the question about the = relationship of=20 these Christian minorities with Israel, Nisan said =93the reasons why = Christians=20 would be the foes of the Jewish state are there. First because of = religious=20 influence. Christians, particularly in the West have persecuted Jews. = Another=20 reason in the Middle East would be the deep Arab Islamic influence and = the=20 linguistic attachment of these Christians to Arab culture. But there are = more=20 reasons why Christians feel they are the allies of Israel. One is that = both=20 Christians and Jews are considered as second class citizens by Islam. = Two, is=20 that state of Israel is the dream for many non Moslem minorities looking = towards=20 independence. Three is that Christian peoples are today oppressed by = Arab Moslem=20 regimes, the same regimes which are seeking the destruction of Israel. = All of=20 the above mentioned realities makes the alliance between Israel and the=20 Christian minorities a must.=20

Moving to the Moslem non-Arab = minorities Nisan=20 addressed first the case of the Kurds. =93They are the largest = nationality in the=20 world without a state.  Eighteen million Kurds live in Turkey, = Iran, Iraq,=20 Syria and the diaspora. Although Moslems, the Kurds were denied the = right to=20 statehood by Arabs, Iranians and Turks.=94 Then comes the Berbers of = North Africa=20 who numbers about eight millions. After having been defeated by the = Arabs and=20 Islamized, the Berbers are submitted to cultural suppression.=94 Two = other=20 minorities were also discussed by Nisan: The Druzes who live in Syria, = Lebanon,=20 and Israel. And the Alawites who, despite not exceeding 8% of the=20 population,  rule Syria since 1970. Professor Nisan then discussed = the=20 Israeli involvement with these minorities.
=93The Palestinians, who are portrayed as a national = minority inside=20 Israel have obstructed and opposed the rights to other oppressed = minorities. In=20 Lebanon the massacred the Christians. In Iraq, they supported Saddam = Hussein=20 regime against Kurdish rights. In Sudan, they endorsed the Islamist = regime=20 against the Black revolt of the south. Israel in contrast has deployed = number of=20 efforts in the past decades to assist these minorities. Support was = extended to=20 the Kurds in northern Iraq until 1975. In the sixties and seventies, = Israeli=20 assistance was provided to the southern Sudanese. Finally, since 1977 = Israel has=20 supplied the Christians of Lebanon, particularly in the south, with = multiple=20 type of support. Not all of these initiatives were successful, but the = channels=20 between Israel and Middle-East minorities were = established.=94
=20

Nisan concluded that in light of the = ongoing=20 attempts by the Arab world to annihilate Israel, or to weaken it, it is = all the=20 more natural that the Jewish state should seek the establishment of = solid=20 bridges with the small peoples, starting with the closest geographically = and the=20 most evident politically, i.e. the Christians
of Lebanon.
=20

Professor Nisan is the author of = "Toward a New=20 Israel : The Jewish State and the Arab Question", "Identity and = Civilization :=20 Essays on Judaism, Christianity, and Islam", & "Minorities in the = Middle=20 East : A History of Struggle and self-expression".

ASSYRIAN AID SOCIETY OF AMERICA = AND=20 POLITICS

We are often asked about the = political=20 affiliation of the Assyrian Aid Society.  We wish to confirm that = the AAS=20 limits its activities to charitable and humanitarian pursuits and does = not enter=20 into politics at any level.=20

This in no way precludes AAS members = from holding=20 special political convictions and/or affiliations.  However, the = AAS itself=20 has not, and does not align or affiliate itself with any political = group,=20 domestic or international.  In that respect, we call on all = Assyrian women=20 and men in the U.S. without distinction, to the work of the AAS to aid = and=20 support out people in need.=20

The AAS is aware that the help it = lends to our=20 people in North Iraq is not realized in a vacuum.  We know well = that our=20 people in North Iraq are active politically and that the Assyrian = Democratic=20 Movement (Zowaa) is leading this nation in its struggle.  It is = common=20 knowledge that much of what our people have been able to achieve has = been due to=20 the success of the nationalist struggle.  How else would we be able = to have=20 a government sanctioned charitable organization such as the Assyrian Aid = society=20 of Iraq (AASI), to be able to rebuild our villages, churches, and = school; to be=20 able to establish Assyrian cultural centers and mass organizations and = to teach=20 our language in public schools?=20

Therefore, it is not surprising to = know that the=20 AAS has a close working relationship with Zowaa, as do all other = Assyrian=20 entities - be they village councils, schools, cultural centers or mass=20 organizations.  To all of them this cooperation is a necessity = because=20 Zowaa is recognized as the representative of the Assyrian people in that = area by=20 our people, by the local authorities and by international forces in the=20 area..=20

We are encouraged that there is an = Assyrian=20 entity that can open doors for our people to organize themselves and for = us it=20 is the diaspora to find partners such as the AAS to collaborate with, = towards=20 fulfillment of our aims and objectives.=20

Taking advantage of these = opportunities opened by=20 the fact that our sister organization has a close working relationship = with=20 Zowaa does not in any way tie the AAS politically to Zowaa, or diminish = its=20 status as a non-political charitable organization.  Nor does our = taking=20 advantage of U.S. laws to organize and operate in this country tie us in = any way=20 to the U.S. government or its political institutions.=20

The fact remains that the AAS has an = independent=20 Board of Directors that sets the policies and agendas of the = organization=20 without affiliation or direction from any political group.=20
