THE GENETICS OF MODERN = ASSYRIANS &=20 THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO OTHER PEOPLE OF THE MIDDLE EAST =


The authors of the book "The History and Geography of = Human=20 Genes"(1), published in 1994, and the abridged version in 1962, took on = the=20 monumental task of analyzing the vast number of research articles = written about=20 genetic properties of different human populations. The senior author, = Prof. L.L.=20 Cavalli-Sforza, Professor of Genetics at Stanford University, is = considered one=20 of the preeminent human population geneticists in the world, a field = that he has=20 been working in for over forty years.=20

After eight years of collecting this massive = information, the=20 authors spent several more years doing the genetic and statistical = analyses=20 using sophisticated computer methods. The objective was nothing less = than to=20 define the genetic variations in the entire human population of the = world and,=20 from that information, to trace the origin and migration of modern = humans to=20 their present locations on the planet (hence the "History and Geography" = in the=20 title). As the American Journal of Human Genetics stated, "This book = represents=20 a landmark in biology. There is nothing of its kind... where the = evolutionary=20 history of a single species possessing a cosmopolitan distribution is = distilled=20 from genetic, morphological, and cultural data. It represents an = essential=20 historical source for all human biologists ... " And as the New York = Times said,=20 "Perhaps more than anyone else in his field, Dr. Cavalli-Sforza ... has = been=20 able to make sense of the whisperings of human ancestors that are = recorded in=20 the genes of present-day people."=20

For their study, the authors chose to use data from = only those=20 populations that had been in the same geographic area for at least 500 = years.=20 They considered them as the native indigenous people of an area = ("aboriginal")=20 that could be used to trace human population origins, relationships and=20 migrations. From analysis of the genes in these populations, it became = possible=20 to determine not only the genetic makeup of a people and the genetic=20 relationships of different groups to each other, but also to measure the = "genetic distance" between them. The analyses showed that there were = sufficient=20 data to provide statistically significant information on the genetic=20 characteristics of 491 different human populations. Assyrians were one = of=20 them3-6. In this article, we will focus on the knowledge that has been = gained=20 about Assyrians and the genetic relationships between Assyrians and = their=20 neighbors, with the hope that it will lead to better understanding = between the=20 people of the Middle East.=20

Members of a specific human population, for example = an ethnic=20 group, identify with each other by a shared language and also by = cultural,=20 religious, social, geographic, and other features which are held in = common. They=20 distinguish themselves from other groups by the same criteria. What are = "hidden"=20 from external view are genetically determined attributes of the type = that are=20 only brought into the light by scientific methods such as those = described in=20 this book, and they reveal a very important component of a group - its = genetic=20 character. This can provide both a genetic definition of a group and = also its=20 relationships to other groups that would not be apparent otherwise. The = use of=20 language along with genetics to define groups is very useful, but = linguistic=20 change can occur much faster than genetic change and "languages are = sometimes=20 replaced by others of totally different origin in a very short time", as = will be=20 pointed out later in this article. As the authors state, "Only genes = almost=20 always have the degree of permanence necessary for discussing" the = changes in=20 populations that took place in the history of our species.=20

I have attempted the difficult task of presenting = this=20 information for the general reader in a concise way without compromising = accuracy. Technical terms placed in parentheses are informative but not=20 essential to understanding the basic ideas. But one technical element is = crucial=20 to the understanding of this information and I must briefly discuss it = here. The=20 chemical substance that makes up genes is DNA. A specific gene = controlling the=20 formation of a specific product may undergo a chemical alteration in its = DNA=20 ("mutation"). The product that it forms will then also be altered. We = now have=20 two forms of the same gene ("alleles") in the population and different=20 individuals can get different forms of the gene. In the case of the = familiar A,=20 B, AB, and O blood types, whether an individual has the A form of the = gene, the=20 B form, or neither, determines the blood type. A human population can be = genetically characterized by determining the distribution of the various = forms=20 of genes within that population ("gene frequency") - for example, what=20 percentage of the population has the A, B, or O gene. When this is done = for=20 enough people and for enough different genes a "genetic profile" emerges = for=20 that population. Genes control the synthesis of proteins. In the = "classical"=20 studies that form the greater part of the material in the Cavalli-Sforza = et al.=20 book, the structure of the protein is analyzed as a genetic marker - the = specific structure of the protein reflects the specific structure of the = gene=20 that codes for it. The proteins commonly analyzed as genetic markers are = those=20 that determine various types of blood groups, enzymes, blood serum = proteins,=20 hemoglobin, antibodies and cellular markers of the immune system (HLA = system).=20 In addition, direct analysis of DNA has recently become increasingly = common and,=20 of course, adds to the information pool about the genetic makeup of a = people. In=20 his very recent book (2a), Cavalli-Sforza says: "Results with DNA have=20 complemented but never contradicted the protein data." An example of DNA = analysis will be seen later as part of the discussion of Jewish=20 genetics.=20

Analysis of the Assyrians shows that they have a = distinct=20 genetic profile that distinguishes their population from any other = population.=20 It is important to understand that this applies to the population as a = whole,=20 not to any one individual. Each individual can have a variety of genetic = features, but it is when all the data for the individuals are assembled = together=20 that the population can become distinctive. The authors state that "The=20 Assyrians are a fairly homogeneous group of people, believed to = originate from=20 the land of old Assyria in northern Iraq," and "they are Christians and = are=20 possibly bona fide descendants of their namesakes." The main research = paper on=20 Assyrians is that of Akbari et al. (3), who state "that the Assyrians = are a=20 group of Christians with a long history in the Middle East. From = historical and=20 archeological evidence, it is thought that their ancestors formed part = of the=20 Mesopotamian civilization." Akbari et al. examined some 500 members of = Christian=20 communities in Iran (Armenians and Assyrians from six localities) from = whom=20 specimens were obtained and examined for a number of blood group, red = cell=20 enzyme and serum protein systems. In the case of Assyrians, the = researchers=20 studied 18 different gene sites with a total of 47 different forms of = those=20 genes (alleles) in Assyrians in two regions of Iran - Urmia and Tehran. = The=20 particular gene frequencies of those 47 genes in the population formed = the=20 basis, along with the other two studies (4, 5), for establishing the = distinctive=20 genetic character of the Assyrians. A major finding of the study is that = Assyrians, especially those in Urmia (their home area in Iran), are = genetically=20 homogeneous to a high degree. That is, an individual Assyrian's genetic = makeup=20 is relatively close to that of the Assyrian population as a whole. "The = results=20 indicate the relatively closed nature of the [Assyrian] community as a = whole,"=20 and "due to their religious and cultural traditions, there has been = little=20 intermixture with other populations." The small size of the population = is also a=20 factor. The genetic data are compatible with historical data that = religion=20 played a major role in maintaining the Assyrian population's separate = identity=20 during the Christian era.=20



For most of that period Assyrians existed as a = Christian=20 minority in non-Christian majority populations, and adherence to their = religion,=20 abundantly documented in the historical record, would have provided a = "genetic=20 barrier" to gene flow from external groups. In analyzing other groups in = similar=20 situations, Cavalli-Sforza et al. arrived at this opinion: "The = important=20 conclusion is that the genetic origin of groups that have been = surrounded for a=20 long time by populations of different genetic type can be recognized as=20 different only if they have maintained a fairly rigid endogamy [ = marriage within=20 the group] for most or all the period in which they have been in contact = with=20 other groups," although genes contributed by external groups ("gene = flow") can=20 be tolerated for many centuries or even millennia by a population, = provided they=20 are not on a large scale. Later in this article we will see an analogous = situation with Jews, where a religious difference allowed them to = maintain their=20 genetic characteristics as a minority over many centuries while living = among=20 non-Jewish majority populations. In any case, the data provide = unequivocal=20 evidence that Assyrians as a people are distinguishable from all other=20 population groups in their genetic characteristics and are not a part of = any=20 other population.=20

The second important contribution that emerges from = the book is=20 seen when genetic relationships are made between the 18 populations of = Western=20 Asia for which enough data were available to allow meaningful = interpretation.=20 The results are summarized in the "tree" shown in the figure. The = horizontal=20 scale at the bottom quantitates the genetic distance between groups. The = individual populations are listed in the general order of their = relationships.=20 The three Arab populations at the lowest part of the "tree" (Saudi, = Yemeni,=20 Bedouin) are close to each other genetically but are so far separated = from the=20 others as to constitute what the authors call a separate "minor = cluster." The=20 remaining 15 groups constitute the "major cluster."=20

Our primary purpose here is to define the = relationships of=20 Assyrians to their closest neighbors in the Middle East, so we will = focus on=20 seven groups that appear at the top of the "tree." Of these, Iranian and = Iraqi=20 are defined by the country of origin, after exclusion of Kurds. = Jordanian,=20 Lebanese and Turkish also mean the country of origin. Assyrians and = Kurds refer=20 to specific groups of people. All those studied were indigenous people = of the=20 area whose roots in their geographic locations go back to at least 1500 = A.D.=20 Relationship pairings are shown: Turkish and Iranian, and Assyrian and = Jordanian=20 are "loose" pairings; Druse and Lebanese form a closer pair; and Iraqi = and=20 Kurdish people form an extremely close pairing. The closest genetic=20 relationships of the Assyrians are with the native populations of Jordan = and=20 Iraq. In point of fact, however, all of the seven populations of = interest are=20 quite close to each other. There are no wide separations between any of = them.=20 This despite the fact that they contain members of three major language=20 families: Indo-European (Iranian, Kurdish), Turkic (Turkish) and Semitic = (Iraqi,=20 Jordanian, Lebanese - Arabic; Assyrian - Aramaic). As the authors state, = "In=20 spite of the complex history of the Middle East and the great number of = internal=20 group migrations revealed by history, as well as the mosaic of cultures = and=20 languages, the region is relatively homogeneous" [genetically]. The = least=20 heterogeneous zone of Asia "is observed in the Near East, where the = highest=20 population densities have existed the longest, especially in the central = part=20 (Mesopotamia). Ten thousand years of agriculture, ancient urban = developments,=20 and internal migrations are probably responsible for this homogeneity." = Thus, in=20 that part of the world with the most ancient civilizations, an = underlying=20 genetic homogeneity has been "masked" by great cultural, religious and=20 linguistic heterogeneity.=20

The latter point is also made in studies of Jews. = Based on=20 earlier studies using classical genetic methods7 , Cavalli-Sforza et al. = came to=20 the conclusion "that Jews have maintained considerable genetic = similarity among=20 themselves and with people from the Middle East, with whom they have = common=20 origins." Evidence for the latter concept was very convincingly made and = extended by an international team of scientists in a very recent = research=20 article8 ,widely reported in the press, in which the genetics of = different=20 Middle Eastern populations were studied using a completely different = method than=20 the classical methods that form the great majority of papers in the=20 Cavalli-Sforza et al book. The research involved direct DNA analysis of = the Y=20 chromosome, which is found only in males and is passed down from father = to son.=20 Seven different Jewish groups from communities in Europe, North Africa = and the=20 Middle East were compared to various non-Jewish populations from those = areas.=20 The results showed, first of all, that "Despite their long-term = residence in=20 different countries and isolation from one another, most Jewish = populations were=20 not significantly different from one another at the genetic level." = Furthermore,=20 the genetic characteristics of Jews were shown to be distinctly = different from=20 (non-Jewish) Europeans, suggesting that very little admixture occurred = between=20 Jews and Europeans, even after about 80 generations of Jews in Europe. = There was=20 a similar distinct difference between Jews and North Africans. In = striking=20 contrast, there was an "extremely close affinity of Jewish and = non-Jewish Middle=20 Eastern populations [Palestinians, Syrians, Lebanese, Druze, Saudi = Arabians]=20 observed here ...[that] supports the hypothesis of a common Middle = Eastern=20 origin" of these populations dating back about 4,000 years. The = differences=20 between the populations were not statistically significant, = demonstrating once=20 again the close genetic relationship of Middle Eastern populations to = each=20 other. In fact, the Palestinians and Syrians were so close to the Jews = in=20 genetic characteristics that they "mapped within the central cluster of = Jewish=20 populations." As one of the Israeli scientists on the team said, = "Eventually=20 people will realize that they are not that different." Peace through=20 Genetics?=20

Let us examine the situation in two areas of the = Middle East=20 where a radical change in the population and language occurred rapidly = without=20 being accompanied by a significant genetic change, and try to explain = it. The=20 land that now forms the nation of Turkey (Anatolia) was once a part of=20 Byzantium. Greek (Christian) was the major influence there. The = Turkic-speaking=20 people arrived there from Central Asia in the 11th century A.D., spread=20 successfully throughout the land and Turkish eventually became the = dominant=20 language as a Turkish nation was established. Turks are, as the authors = state,=20 "the only major group in the region that speak a language originated at = a great=20 geographic distance (probably in the Altaic region)." The pre-existing = people in=20 Anatolia, however, did not physically disappear. The genetic studies = show that=20 the majority became part of the new Turkish population. The genetic = constitution=20 of the Turks today is much closer to their nearest geographic neighbors, = although none is a Turkic-language population, than to the = Turkic-speaking=20 populations of Central Asia. The authors interpret this to mean that = "the=20 Turkish language was imposed on a predominantly Indo-European-speaking=20 population (Greek being the official language of the Byzantine empire), = and=20 genetically there is very little difference between Turkey and the = neighboring=20 countries. The number of Turkish invaders was probably rather small and = was=20 genetically diluted by the large number of aborigines." And [ in Turkey] = "language replacement has occurred essentially without, or with very = little,=20 gene replacement."=20

In view of the authors' theory explaining the genetic = characteristics of the population in Turkey, it seems reasonable to = consider the=20 possibility that a similar type of event may have occurred in the Arab = world of=20 Mesopotamia and its adjacent regions - Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon (and = presumably=20 also Syria and Palestine) - to explain the genetic characteristics of = those=20 populations. In the 7th century A.D., after the conversion to Islam, the = Arabs=20 of the Arabian peninsula conquered large areas, including Mesopotamia = and=20 adjacent regions. Arabic became the major language of the region and an = Arab=20 nation was established there under Islam. But again, the pre-existing = indigenous=20 population, mainly Christian (including Assyrians), did not physically=20 disappear, and the majority must have become part of the Arab = population.=20 Looking at the figure, one sees a very large genetic separation between = the=20 Arabs of the South - Saudis, Yemenites - and those in the region of = Mesopotamia=20 - Jordanian, Iraqi. The latter two groups are much closer genetically to = the=20 four non-Arab people of the region that we are interested in (Turk, = Iranian,=20 Kurd, Assyrian) than to the Arabs of the Arabian peninsula. As in the = case of=20 the Turks in Anatolia, these findings provide a clue that a relatively = small=20 number of Arabs from the Arabian peninsula may have carried out the = conquest of=20 a region with a much larger population, which included a number of = cities, and=20 that although the dominant language, religion and culture changed, the = genes of=20 the previous population may not have been significantly diluted and were = transmitted to the present population of that region.=20

Finally, as seen in the figure, the two Indo-European = language=20 populations, the Iranians and the Kurds, are genetically closer to the = Turks and=20 the Semitic language group of Iraqi, Jordanian, Lebanese, Assyrian, than = they=20 are to their nearest Indo-European language speaking neighbors - = Armenian,=20 Pathan, Hazara Tajiki. In fact, the figure shows that the latter are = part of a=20 separate subcluster from the one in which the Iranians and Kurds are=20 located.=20

The results of these scientific studies lead to the = startling=20 realization that Turks, Iranians, Kurds, Iraqis, Jordanians, Lebanese = are more=20 closely related genetically to Assyrians than they are to other members = of their=20 own respective language families in Asia. These seven groups (and Jews) = are=20 genetically close. The great language, cultural and religious = differences are=20 not reflected in the most fundamental aspect of their biology - their = genes,=20 which are the most accurate indicators of their shared origins and = ancestry. If=20 this were widely known, would the Assyrians seem so "different" to the = others?=20 Would changes in attitude begin to take place, especially among the = intellectual=20 and academic communities and the younger generations?=20

We stand with hope at the dawn of a new millennium. = For mankind=20 in general, the future holds exciting scientific prospects for = understanding our=20 past and present genetic nature. The tiniest amounts of DNA recovered = from=20 people who died thousands of years ago can now be exactly reproduced = billions of=20 times, providing abundant material for analyzing the genetic nature of = ancient=20 ancestors ("genetic archeology"). The "whisperings of our ancestors" can = now be=20 heard by us with our DNA amplifiers. Molecular genetics is poised to = take=20 understanding of the human race to heights undreamed of just a few years = ago.=20 Within the year there will occur one of the most momentous events in = human=20 history - the complete definition of the entire human genetic code = (genome) of=20 about 100,000 genes ("human genome project"). We will be able to see the = complete DNA blueprint for creating a human being, God's handwritten = letter to=20 us9. Future research will show how little difference there is between us = in our=20 DNA, giving us an unparalleled opportunity to understand how much of our = humanity we hold in common.=20

Also standing at the dawn of the new millennium are = the=20 Assyrians - on the brink of extinction. For over 1900 years since they = accepted=20 Christianity and established the Church of the East, the Assyrians in = the Middle=20 East have survived for the most part as a religious and language = minority. While=20 this preserved their identity and kept them from disappearing, it came = at a=20 terrible price. The history of the Assyrians reads like one long = unbroken story=20 of massacre, persecution and indescribable horror, culminating in the = 20th=20 century with genocide and diaspora, followed by even more persecution = and=20 massacre. Was it just a coincidence that the first fratricide occurred = in the=20 Middle East, when Cain murdered his brother Abel? Will we ever be free = of the=20 curse of Cain? Will the younger generations of the Middle East release = their=20 souls from the dark forces of the past? Will the knowledge that = Assyrians are=20 their "blood relatives" begin to change the perception of Middle Eastern = people=20 about Assyrians? Will it be too late for the Assyrians?=20

ASSYRIAN-CATHOLIC LEADER = ASKS FOR=20 LIFTING OF EMBARGO

(ZNDA:  Baghdad)  The = Assyrian-Catholic Archbishop Athanase Matti Shaba Matoka of Baghdad said = to the=20 Vatican news agency that he wishes for the economic sanctions against = Iraq to be=20 lifted.  Archbishop Athanase Matti was in Rome on a pilgrimage to = the tomb=20 of St. Peter.  He made his statement to the Vatican agency = Fides.  The=20 archbishop, 70, is the leader of the Assyrian-Iraqi Catholics which = number about=20 50,000 faithful.  Assyrian-Chaldean Catholics number over 800,000 = in=20 Iraq.=20

The archbishop told Fides that = Iraqi=20 Christians are leaving the country: "Many Iraqi Christian families crowd = the=20 doors of embassies in Amman (Jordan), ready to do anything to obtain a = visa for=20 America, Canada or Australia."  A U.N. embargo was imposed after = Iraq's=20 invasion of Kuwait in 1990. The Church, Caritas and Iraqi benefactors = abroad are=20 sending medical supplies and assistance to help the country's=20 people.=20

The Assyrian-Catholic Church = traces its=20 roots to 1783 when it joined communion with Rome. Its has about 150,000 = members,=20 two-thirds of whom live in the Middle East (Iraq, Syria and Lebanon, = spread over=20 nine dioceses). The rest are abroad, primarily in the United=20 States.

AACC OF TURLOCK, PRESIDENT = UNDER=20 POLICE INVESTIGATION

(ZNDA: Turlock)  The = Assyrian American=20 Civic Club of Turlock is under investigation for possible financial=20 improprieties.  Police Chief Lonald Lott sent a letter to members = of the=20 club last week telling them that the organization is being investigated = and that=20 detectives may contact them.=20

Search warrants were served = last Friday on=20 the Assyrian American Civic Club and the home of its president, Mr. = Ramin=20 Odisho.  "This is all a surprise to us," said Ramin Odisho, = president of=20 the 1,200-member club, the largest Assyrian organization in the United = States.=20 "I really can't say much until I understand what this is all = about."  Mr.=20 Odisho was the youngest member of the AACC to be elected as president; = he is=20 currently serving his second term.=20

Police received several reports = in October=20 from people who said there are financial misdeeds going on at the club, = said=20 Rosemary Howser, spokeswoman for the Police Department. The = investigation=20 formally was opened earlier this month, she said.  Police would not = give=20 details of the complaints.=20

"We believe there is a great = potential for=20 misappropriation of funds at the club," Howser said. "The purpose of = this=20 investigation is to formally investigate the reports and charge anyone = who is=20 committing any illegal activity."  There have been no=20 arrests.=20

Detectives served search = warrants at the=20 club Friday and seized several computers and club documents, Howser = said. They=20 also searched Odisho's home and took club records and club property = found=20 there. =

"Turlock police services = recognizes your=20 club as a valuable member of our community," Lott wrote to members. "It = is not=20 our intent to create a hardship or inhibit the operations of your club's = activities, but rather to assist your club with our=20 services."=20

Odisho said the club remains = open while the=20 investigation continues.  Located 2618 N. Golden State Blvd., the = club is=20 the site of a number of social and community events, including bingo and = weddings.=20

"I'm aware there's an = investigation into=20 allegations with bingo and other issues," said City Councilman John = Lazar, a=20 member of the club. "My position is to wait and see what comes in during = the=20 course of the investigation."=20

Odisho is the first president = in the club's=20 history to serve two terms in the position. He was re-elected earlier = this year=20 after the club's charter was amended to allow people to serve = consecutive=20 terms.  During his first term, the club held its first Assyrian New = Year's=20 parade in the city and began adding services to the = organization.=20

SYRIAC-MALANKARA CATHOLICS MEET = THE=20 POPE

(ZNDA:  India)  Last = week Pope=20 John Paul II received members of the Syriac-Malankara Catholic Church of = India=20 in Vatican.  A Mass was celebrated in the Roman Basilica of Santa = Maria in=20 Trastevere.
The = Syriac=20 pilgrims were accompanied by Metropolitan Archbishop Cyril Baselios=20 Makancharuvil of Trivandrum.=20

The Syriac-Malankara Catholic = Church is=20 also known as the "Church of St. Thomas," as it began with the apostle's = preaching. There are four religious congregations in this Church, which = is=20 rooted in India: the Order of the Imitation of Christ, the religious of = the=20 Imitation of Christ, the Daughters of Mary, and the Kristia Sanyasa = Sabha=20 (Christian Religious Congregation).  The Syriac-Malankara Church, = of the=20 Antioch rite, regained full communion with Rome in 1930. It retains its = special=20 liturgy in the local tongue, Malayalam.=20

The Pope asked the = Syriac-Malankara=20 Catholics "to invoke God's love on the Christians of the Oriental = Churches, that=20 in new and deeper ways they may 'discover the fact that they are all = walking=20 together toward the one Lord ... and, thus, toward each = other."=20

Last Thursday Pope John Paul = also met with=20 members of the Syriac Catholic Church of Antioch in Vatican.  They = were=20 accompanied to Rome by Patriarch Ignace Moussa I Daoud.   John = Paul II=20 on Saturday officially appointed Patriarch Ignace Moussa I Daoud of = Antioch of=20 the Syrians, as prefect of the Vatican Congregation for the Oriental=20 Churches.  The new Vatican prefect, who will quite likely be = created a=20 cardinal at the next consistory, is replacing Cardinal Achille = Silvestrini, 77,=20 who resigned for reasons of age.=20

It was in Antioch where Jesus' = followers=20 were first called "Christians".  According to an ancient tradition, = all=20 heads of the Syriac-Catholic Church of Antioch have Ignatius' name as a = first=20 patriarchal title.  This Church, whose patriarchate since 1920 has = been=20 located in Beirut, Lebanon, embraces Catholics living in Syria, Lebanon = and=20 Iraq.=20

AFTER THE = REVOLUTION:  A=20 CHRISTIAN REPORT ON IRAN

I have just led a church = delegation to the=20 Islamic republic of Iran. It aimed to engage in inter-religious = dialogue,=20 monitor human rights and support Christian and other minority=20 communities.=20

Change is occurring in Iran; = there is=20 foreign investment, women are visible and, at least in the cities, the = dress=20 code has been relaxed. In some respects, the position of women is better = than=20 before 1979. Religious and ethnic minorities are also a little more = relaxed, and=20 appear to be freer than in the early revolutionary years. There seems to = be a=20 policy of fostering inter-faith dialogue.=20

But, it has to be said, the = United Nations'=20 special rapporteur has noted a worsening of the human rights situation,=20 especially in relation to the trial of Jews for espionage, the situation = of the=20 Bahais - with some marginal improvements - and the press=20 clampdown.=20

Most people we met were aware = that the=20 expectations of the early days of Khatami's presidency and the new = majlis=20 (parliament), had been unrealistic, and that change must come more = cautiously=20 and gradually. There is a struggle going on for the nation's soul = between an old=20 guard that wishes to preserve the purity of the revolution's ideals, and = those=20 who want the values of an ancient civilisation reasserted and who would = like=20 Iran, once again, to open up to the outside world.=20

We found an eagerness for this = kind of=20 contact. The deeply-rooted mystical and anti-clerical aspects of Iranian = Islam=20 are coming to the fore, once again, as is the desire for a diverse and = tolerant=20 society.=20

The meetings with those = responsible for=20 education, including clerical education, showed a deep awareness of = western=20 intellectual and social currents. Traditionally dressed ayatollahs and=20 Hojjatul-Islams showed a lively interest in, for example, post-modernism = and the=20 deconstructionists. The implications for hermeneutics which this raised = in=20 relation to sacred texts, and the ways in which traditional exegesis was = responding to these challenges, were matters of mutual=20 interest.=20

Such attitudes could be very = significant if=20 they influence the study of the Koran and the traditions. There has been = some=20 translation of Christian theology, and a desire to do more. Scholars = appeared=20 open to advice, centres for interfaith dialogue are developing, and = there was a=20 desire that non-Muslim faiths should be taught by adherents of those = faiths, and=20 that research and teaching in this area should not be used for = apologetic or=20 proselytising purposes. Some scholars desire a view of plurality = faithful to=20 Islam, and open to dialogue and learning.=20

Lawmakers are interested in the = moral basis=20 for western law. They appeared well-informed regarding the dangers of = merely=20 following public opinion, crude forms of utilitarianism and the = over-emphasis on=20 the individual. Most wanted to affirm Islam's teaching, and for its = principles=20 to be embodied in law, but they were aware that such applications must = take into=20 account contemporary circumstances.=20

Senior figures suggested that = parliament=20 was the best forum for deciding how Islamic principles should be = applied; the=20 examples given were about the promotion of monogamy and the development = of penal=20 law. The role of reason in relation to revelation was stressed. It may = well be=20 that those traditions of Islam, both Shia and Sunni, which give reason a = role in=20 the interpretation of revelation, will be in the vanguard for the = development of=20 Shariah or Islamic law, on which so much else = depends.=20

The suggested parliamentary = role has=20 implications for the clerically-dominated theocracy, with pressure on = the=20 council of guardians to take a more progressive view of Islamic law. = Much=20 depends on how tension between the majlis and the council of guardians = is=20 resolved.=20

Senior figures are now opening = up=20 conversations with religious minorities, and are conspicuous at these=20 communities' events. There is even an acknowledgment that some movement = of=20 individuals between faith communities is inevitable.=20

At the same time, members of = these=20 communities continue to report intimidation. Some need to have their = legal=20 status recognised, and confiscated properties returned and repaired. = Government=20 needs to clarify the balance between community and individual rights; = there is a=20 tendency to privilege the former.=20

One reason for greater = tolerance may be the=20 emi- gration of skilled people - including Christians, Jews and = Zoroastrians. To=20 halt this brain drain, society has to be more open, rights respected and = the=20 press allowed to exercise its functions. Many of those who left Iran = should be=20 allowed to return.=20

Interest in an international = dialogue stems=20 partly from the desire of Iran's rulers to end the country's isolation. = But we=20 need to point out that no civilisation is entirely homogeneous, and a = dialogue=20 is needed also within civilisations. Iran has many ancient religious=20 communities. Their contribution to Iranian culture should be=20 acknowledged.=20

We saw much to suggest that = both kinds of=20 dialogue are beginning. But immediate improvement is needed in the = situation of=20 minority communities, the judicial system must be seen to be fair, = punishment=20 rehabilitative and the press free to investigate and criticise. = Otherwise,=20 dialogue will be fruitless and the country could return to the dark days = just=20 after the revolution. But there is also the possibility of much fruit = both for=20 Iran and for the rest of the world.=20

Those reformers are taking = risks and need=20 support. The slow pace of change may be frustrating for outsiders, but = patience=20 is an ancient value in Iran. As the country's premier poet, the = 14th-century=20 Hafiz of Shiraz, said: "Patience and success are old friends:/ From = patience's=20 sedate walk/ Comes victory's triumphal march."=20

PATRIARCH IGNACE MOUSSA I=20 DAOUD

His Beatitude was born on September 18, = 1930 in=20 Maskane, a village near Homs, Syria. He has two brothers and three = sisters all=20 married. His mother, Kahla Elias Dabbas is still alive and his father = Daoud=20 Moussa Daoud passed away a few years ago. He attended his primary = studies under=20 the supervision of Rev. Hanna Makdissi. In December 1941, he entered the = seminary of St. Ephrem-St. Benoit in Jerusalem run by the French Fathers = Benedictine, he continued his complimentary and secondary studies at the = same=20 seminary.=20

In 1948, following the war = between the=20 Palestinian war between Jews and Arabs, the seminary was transferred to = the=20 Convent of Charfet, Lebanon. He completed his philosophy and theology = studies at=20 the same seminary from the year 1949 until the year 1955. He was = ordained priest=20 on October 17, 1954 by the late Cardinal Patriarch Igance Gabriel I = Tappouni at=20 the St. Georges Cathedral for the Syriac Catholics in Beirut with seven = of his=20 priest colleagues, and amongst them five have been ordained bishops. He = returned=20 to his diocese of origin in Homs in 1955 and had the following = responsibilities:=20 Professor of Catechism at St. Joseph School, Vicar parish priest, = principal of=20 the school and parish priest, secretary to the Archbishop and thereafter = episcopal vicar general. In 1962 he was sent to Rome to study Canon Law = at the=20 University of Latran and obtained his Masters in = 1964.=20

In 1970, His Beatitude, Mar = Igance Antoine=20 II Hayek appointed him Patriarchal Secretary General, he held this = position for=20 seven consecutive years. He was elected bishop for the diocese of Cairo = at the=20 Patriarchal Synod in 1977. His consecration took place at our Lady of=20 Deliverance Church in Charfet, Lebanon. He was enthroned in Cairo at the = Church=20 of St. Catherine on 7 October 1977. He served the diocese of Cairo for = seventeen=20 years and accomplished the following: Construction of a cathedral = dedicated to=20 Our Lady of the Rosary, Cairo.=20

At the Patriarchal Synod in = 1994, he was=20 transferred from the diocese of Cairo to the diocese of Homs, Syria. He = was=20 enthronement at Our Lady of Deliverance Church at Zeidal, Homs on = September 18,=20 1994. He was nominated Consultant for the Commission for the revision of = Cannon=20 Law and remained such for 15 years, thereafter he became member of the = same=20 commission for five years. He presides the Commission of translation of = Latin=20 and Arabic Cannon Law for Oriental Churches in Cairo. A few years he was = elected=20 member of the congregation for the Doctrine of Faith in Rome. In 1995 he = was=20 nominated permanent member of the Synod and member of the Superior Court = of=20 Judicial Affairs for the Syriac Catholic Church. In 1977 he was = nominated=20 President of the community Beneficiary Commission (Syria) by the = Assembly of=20 Catholic Patriarchs and Bishops in Syria. At the Patriarchal Synod of = 1998, he=20 was elected Patriarch of the Syriac Catholic Church on 13 October. His=20 enthronement took place on 25 October 1998 at the Cathedral of Our Lady = of=20 Annunciation, Beirut.=20

Last Saturday, His Beatitude = Ignace Moussa=20 I Daoud was appointed by Pope John Paul II as the prefect of the Vatican = Congregation for the Oriental Churches.  This is an important event = in the=20 canonical history of the Church as once again the primary exponent of = the=20 ancient and glorious Oriental Churches is being occupied by the office = of=20 prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches. In the past, this = post=20 was held by the Armenian patriarch of Catholic rite, Gregoire-Pierre XV=20 Agagianian (1895-1971), and Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy, former = archbishop of=20 Bangalore, India.=20

This Vatican congregation has = the task of=20 being a unifying link with the Eastern Catholic Churches to foster their = growth,=20 safeguard their rights, and maintain the Eastern Christian tradition = alive and=20 whole in the Catholic Church, along with the liturgical and spiritual = patrimony=20 of the Latin Church.=20

Some of these Churches have = other rites=20 (sometimes the same as the Orthodox Church), and another discipline = (some, for=20 example, accept the ordination of married priests). All, however, all=20 acknowledge the primacy of the Bishop of Rome, sign of communion for the = universal Church.=20

In addition, the congregation = has exclusive=20 authority in the following regions: Egypt and the Sinai peninsula, = Eritrea and=20 Northern Ethiopia, Southern Albania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Iran, = Iraq,=20 Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Jordan, Turkey and=20 Afghanistan.
